Matariki and Winter School Holidays: Celebrating at Home and in Our Community

By Ella Lee

Matariki marks a special time for reflection, connection, and new beginnings in Aotearoa. Across Christchurch, it has become an important cultural and community celebration, offering families a chance to slow down, appreciate what they have, and plan for the year ahead.

During the winter school holidays, local attractions and events provide plenty of options for family fun. Tūranga Library hosts Matariki storytelling sessions and interactive workshops for kids, while the Christchurch Art Gallery often features family-friendly exhibitions. Local marae and community centres welcome families to participate in traditional celebrations, kai sharing, and cultural learning experiences.

For outdoor enthusiasts, winter doesn’t mean staying indoors. The Christchurch Coastal Pathway, Bottle Lake Forest, and Travis Wetland offer opportunities for cycling, walking, and birdwatching, while Hanmer Springs and the Port Hills provide weekend escapes for more adventurous families. Even a simple backyard adventure camping, craft projects, or baking together can create lasting holiday memories.

Matariki is also a chance to reflect on what makes a house a home. Families often think about space for children to play safely, flexible areas for homework and hobbies, and kitchens that accommodate shared meals. Being near parks, community centres, shops, and schools like Avonside Girls’ High, Marshland School, and Waitākiri Primary makes winter routines easier and more enjoyable.

Winter holidays combined with cultural celebrations remind us that lifestyle matters just as much as bricks and mortar. A home that supports family connection, wellness, and community participation is more than a place to live, it’s a place where memories are made, traditions are celebrated, and families grow together.
